WELCOME TO NINE FAITH KINDRED FELLOWSHIP OF TEXAS

The sun has set, the darkness has risen. Cool air is setting upon our lands, and it is now time to bring forth winter and its deities.

Winter Nights, Hel Fest, Vetrnaetr, is a holiday that was adopted from the Celts, but titled differently and celebrated differently than the traditional Samhain. Vetrnaetr translates to “Three days to winter” which starts off the first of three major blots that dedicate death deities and honoring the dead. Winter Nights is the first, representing the honor of the dead, and the rising of the Wild Hunt. The second blot that follows this trilogy is Alfblot, typically held between the end of Autumn and the beginning of winter, as the Wild Hunt is getting stronger. The last of the trilogy is Disablot, held in the wake of winter, after Yule, and is dedicated heavily to the female ancestors and deities, at this point the Wild Hunt has taken it’s peak during Yule and has started to ride off into the skies.

Winter Nights is a celebration of the dead in general and our dead ancestors. Those who have fallen in battle or died recently are heavily honored at this time. This is also the time of year where the veil between the dead and the living is at it’s thinnest. Spirits easily cross over into the physical and vice versa. Many believe this is the perfect time to communicate with ancestors and spirits of the past, along with this being the time your Fylgja is at its most connected.

Winter Nights is the Norse, and northern Scandinavia’s Halloween. It is a time to extend spiritual outreach and invoke all that cold nature has to offer.

Winter Nights is more of a time of year, instead of a particular day. This is all while the veil between the dead and living is thinnest, all the way to Yule. We celebrate death deities at Winter Nights, we remind ourselves that Hela will indeed take our physical and nurture our spirit until Freyja seats us accordingly. Her watch dog, the greatest dog Garmr will devour our physical bodies along with Nidhogg. Winter Nights reminds us of our great grandmother Ran, and how she will take back everything she ever gave by catching us with her net as we die. Winter Nights reminds us of Odin, and how his affiliation with death is universal to us all. Odin, the universal spirit is inside of us all, obtaining experience and knowledge, and when we die, the universal spirit will return to us and take us back to himself.

Join the NFK and our celebration of honoring the dead and crossing over into the death realms of our existence. This event is highly encouraged for those who participate in ceremonial face paint.
